After more than four years of planning and construction, this new laboratory-style classroom now offers the equipment needed for a wider range of STEM learning opportunities. This classroom and its technology can inspire students to consider a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) career. The museum’s ultimate goal is to extend its new educational programming to reach any corner of the globe.
The official dedication of the Neil Armstrong STEM Inspiration Center at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum was held July 14, 2019 with Neil Armstrong’s son, Mark, and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine cutting the ribbon. Beyond capacity, the larger classroom now allows educators to cater to middle and high school students with specialized furniture and equipment, which includes lab tables, 3D printers, lap top sets and engineering software.
Video conference technology and green screens further enhance the museum’s outreach capabilities, providing an avenue to STEM education that has no reliance on geographic barriers and travel costs. The museum is now able to connect its programs with people around the world. The STEM Center also allows for much greater participation in the Astronaut Camp and Young Astronaut programs. It is used during special events and has become a major driver of increased attendance.
NASA installed special exhibits in the STEM Center during the museum’s 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon in July 2019. More than 10,000 people visited the museum during the 10-day celebration.
