SCOPE
New Build
West Carrollton City Schools’ 5-6 building, which was co-funded with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, is designed to serve 538 students and 64 staff members. It complements the district’s new PK-1 building design by Garmann Miller with a cohesive, modern approach. This state-of-the-art facility emphasizes functionality and flexibility, reflecting the needs of 21st-century learners.
Safety was a top priority, with the gymnasium and supporting rooms designed to be a ICC 500 tornado shelter with a total area of 8,108 sf. Strategically placed at the center of the building, the shelter ensures quick and easy access during emergencies. The gym’s positioning also allows the building’s front façade to remain welcoming to students and visitors.

The two-story classroom wings incorporate extended learning areas, offering adaptability for evolving educational needs. The dining hall stands out with its exposed ceiling with structural elements painted in a vibrant red, warm wood tile accents around the stage, and advanced lighting systems. Ample natural light also creates an inviting atmosphere for students.

Site design focuses on safety and efficiency, with a dedicated parent drop-off loop separate from the bus circulation. This layout minimizes traffic congestion, allowing cars to queue off the main street. The rear bus lot doubles as event parking, while new playground equipment and two playing fields are conveniently located next to the academic wing.

“It’s fulfilling to design spaces for young people that inspire learning while ensuring safety and adaptability,” said Eric Schmiesing, AIA, GM’s project architect. “This building reflects a commitment to creating educational environments where students and teachers can thrive.”

The exterior design combines timeless materials and colors, with 80% of the façade featuring smooth and textured concrete masonry units for durability and depth. Ribbed vertical metal panels complete the façade, adding a modern aesthetic.
